Spirit Seeding
My big sister and I begin the film she has been scripting in secret since being diagnosed with schizophrenia at 15. Living all her adult life in institutions, she has been secretly scripting a film to show the Queen of England. Now my sister is dying.
Barkindje artist and friend Maddison Gibbs creates and sends a necklace of eucalyptus flower seeds she collected in Kandos, on Wiradjuri Country, New South Wales. She posts this with a note that I share it with 'love, strength, thoughts and spirit'. To me the beaded seeds are the serpent that creates rivers that flow together all stories of relationship that come from the Ocean and our common ancestors, Whale, Krill and Phytoplankton.
Maddison Gibbs:
I spent hours under a tree at the base of Comberinelong mountain Dabee Country,
listening to the native bee hive in action. Very peaceful and meditative.
I hope these [seeds] bring the same calmness and clarity to you.
On Monday 1 November 2021 the moon is waning as the gift arrives where I am in Beechworth, Victoria. I am told by a local tour guide that this is Bpangarang Country. Then in the Beechworth Library I find a book on local history that acknowledges "...the Waywurru-speaking peoples and Dhuahuroa-speaking peoples, their land and their waterways... [and that] in the early 1850s the settlement referred to was known as the Nile Mile or Snake Valley. It was named for the serpentine shape of the winding creek and possibly for snakes".
